Writing Family History: Wallace Stegner Style with Hugh Fitzsimons
Tuesday – Thursday | 1:00 – 4:00pm | $145 August 21 – 23, 2018 Calling All Wallace Stegner fans! “The Big Rock Candy Mountain” is a novel that has both inspired and haunted writer Hugh Fitzsimmons for the past 30 years. The story of a family and that particularly American proclivity for “striking it rich,” Wallace Stegner’s book examines the heartbreak of poverty (and wealth). At its core, it is about lessons learned and the limits of the land, themes that Stegner knew and practiced himself. Students in this class should plan to read “The Big Rock Candy Mountain” before class. Participants will discuss the novel and use it as a template for fictionalizing a family story. If you have an ax to grind but don’t want to get sued – sign up!
