Sense of Place: A Writing Workshop inspired by Wallace Stegner with Hugh Fitzsimons
Monday – Wednesday | 1:00 – 4:00pm | $145 July 16 – 18, 2018 Using the writings, ruminations, and essays of Wallace Stegner as a springboard, visiting artist Hugh Fitzsimmons will inspire students to examine their own particular sense of place. Good news: we all have it. A sense of place and our space within it. By turning inward and fleshing out just what it is that feeds that need to understand that particular place can be both profound and empowering. Students should be at least vaguely familiar with “Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs,” Stegner’s collection of essays concerning living and writing in the west. Writing about a place is a great way to connect the mind and the emotions. Stegner was a master at pulling the reader in. By using both detail and sensual language, he could keep you both spellbound and give you the gift of perhaps a greater message at a story’s conclusion.
