Mountains and Sky: Landscape Painting with Sam Levy | August 19 – 23
Our confrontation with the landscape is the manifestation of our self in the world. Engaging with the landscape is difficult – by nature it is acting upon you as you work – however that creates an experience very special and unique, and so different from working in the controlled environment of the studio. This week-long intensive will investigate making imagery, the urgency of the moment, and the experience of painting outside in Telluride. During the mornings, we will work to complete our paintings (with the goal of developing one extended, larger image over the last two mornings of class). Students will then have the option of working together in the afternoons. Goals will include making meaningful imagery, “drawing with paint”, and expanding our knowledge of landscape painting in general. Students may paint with oils or acrylic, and can expect to have 7-8 paintings by the end of the week. Students should bring a bag lunch and snacks each day. Students are encouraged to use either oils or acrylics. In addition to the morning class, there will be an optional afternoon session from 2-5pm on some days. Students have the option of attending any or all afternoon sessions for an additional $75 per day.
