Material, Content, Context, and the Experiment: How Minimal Art Influences Abstract Painting with Tom Miller
In this intensive three-day workshop offered by post-minimal artist and art professor Tom Miller, we will develop and discuss strategies for making formally abstract paintings. Our conversation will begin with a short discussion of minimal and expressionist artists as a foundation for making our own artworks. We will experiment with multiple painted sketches on paper, exploring the mark of the tool and the scale of the mark. We will then discuss the surface of the painting and paint application as it integrates with color and content. Finally, we will explore our own work and the material practices of others in an observational conversation related to the final paintings each of us make over the course of the workshop. Students will paint with acrylics on paper, panel and/or canvas. This class is open to beginners and experienced painters alike. Please note that there are required materials for this class. Students should also plan to bring a sack lunch and snacks.
