Painting the Figure from Observation with Sam Levy
Paint images that convey not just the human figure, but also the artist’s process. In this week-long intensive, students will learn how to paint the figure from direct observation with an emphasis on describing a search rather than a finished picture. Using oil (preferred) or acrylic paint, the class will work with different palettes and structures designed to open our perceptions when working from life. Students will expand their painting vocabulary with different techniques. Our goals will include: making images that describe the figure in space within a determined amount of time; and making images that convey as much about the creative process as they express about the observed figure. The class will explore and discuss particular artists, including Pierre Bonnard, Henry Matisse, Egon Schiele, Chaim Soutine, Euan Uglow, Alberto Giacometti, Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne, and Vincent Van Gogh. With an emphasis on drawing with the paint, drawing experience is recommended.
