Telluride Plein Air

The 2011 Telluride Plein Air event will take place June 28th through July 4th. Artists will arrive and begin painting in and around the Telluride area on June 28th, with the sale to take place on July 3rd and 4th in front of the Sheridan Opera House (Oak Street and Elk's Park). The gala premiere, silent auction and annual concert will take place the evening of July 2nd at the Sheridan Opera House, so mark your calendars so you don't miss this fabulous event!

Every Fourth of July in Telluride, Colorado, 30 nationally recognized Plein Air artists participate in the Telluride Plein Air celebration. In 2003, the Sheridan Arts Foundation first collaborated with Keith Wicks, Executive Director of Sonoma Plein Air, to produce this event, and now a week of outdoor art has become an indispensible part of the town’s Independence Day festivities.

In addition to observing some of the nation's top Plein Air artists at work, locals and tourists alike enjoy watching our 90 minute quick draw competition on Friday, followed by a Gala Premiere and Silent Auction in the Sheridan Opera House that evening, where each artist displays their most favored piece of the week.  The celebration culminates in a two-day sale, where the artists display the art they created all week long. Forty percent of the sale revenue benefits Telluride community programming through the Sheridan Arts Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit that maintains and preserves the historic Sheridan Opera House.

July 1, 5:30-7pm:

Quick draw competition and sale along Colorado Avenue. This is a great opportunity to view the artists in action, as well as a time to buy “special price” pieces following the competition.

July 2, 6–8:30pm:

Free gala premiere and silent auction event in the Sheridan Opera House. This event will display and auction each artist’s favorite piece of the week, as well as feature free appetizers and a cash bar.  Following the Gala event will be a concert with Rockabilly and Blues master Jason D. Williams, with his band.

July 3 and 4:

Paintings produced throughout the event will be included in the Art Exhibition and Sale outside of the Sheridan Opera House. Attendence is free!
