Joe Ely’s music has spanned honky-tonk, country, and rock n’ roll.  He grew up in Lubbock and founded The Flatlanders with fellow natives Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. In his genre-crossing career, he's performed with groups as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, Uncle Tupelo and The Clash and, more recently, done acoustic tours with Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Guy Clark.

The Band of Heathens began with the three principal songwriters who shared the bill at an Austin club: Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist, and Colin Brooks. Soon they started sharing the stage and collaborating, and the popularity of the shows spread as they evolved into a full band. The Band of Heathens was recognized at the 2007 Austin Music Awards as the Best New Band and was nominated for an Americana Music Award in 2009 as Best New and Emerging Artist. Their 2009 release, One Foot in the Ether, was one of the year’s best records.

Four Nashville writers—Amanda Shires, Rod Picott, Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart—will share the stage in a Thursday night song swap. Picott is a Maine native and frequent collaborator with Slaid Cleaves, the co-writer of the hit “Broke Down.”  Shires is a Texas-born fiddle player who moves easily between western swing and indie rock. Husband and wife duo Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart feature great songwriting, acoustic guitar interplay and are honed from years on the folk/Americana circuit

Mississippi native Jason Eady will open the Friday night show for The Heathens. His 2009 release, When the Money’s All Gone, is a blend of blue-eyed, southern soul and country and was produced by the acclaimed Kevin Welch, a frequent visitor to the Telluride Americana stage.

Sam Baker will open for Joe Ely on Saturday night’s bill. Sam is a classic poet-songwriter who crafts simple and powerful songs. His 2009 release, Cotton, completed an extraordinary trilogy of records that also includes Pretty Worldand Mercy
