TELLURIDE CELEBRATES KENWORTHY AND WELCOMES SOCHI PUPPIESSilver Medalist will be lauded in town parade on March 21

Telluride, CO, (March 19, 2014) — Since the Sochi Olympics, the entire community has been buzzing with excitement over the silver medal success of Telluride native Gus Kenworthy in the men’s slopestyle event. Kenworthy nailed his final run, helping the US men sweep the podium at the first ever Olympic ski slopestyle competition. The Telluride community will celebrate Kenworthy’s tremendous accomplishment on March 21. The Olympic athlete will be in town with the newest additions to his family – the puppies he adopted in Sochi.

“Although Telluride has many individuals who excel, rarely have we had an individual like Gus, who has achieved so much at such a young age,” said Telluride Mayor Stu Fraser. “Gus is not only an Olympic silver medal winner, in a brand new sport, but also an individual who is so representative of the heart of our community on the national stage.”

The festivities kick off at 5:30 p.m. with a parade that starts in Town Park and follows Colorado Avenue (Main Street) to the county courthouse. After the parade, the mayors from Telluride and Mountain Village will speak, and a special dedication will be made in Gus’ honor. Kenworthy and his pups will then hold an autograph signing session at the Courthouse while the street celebration continues with music and complimentary hot chocolate. The evening concludes with a fireworks show at 7:45 p.m.

"The whole community is excited and proud to recognize Gus, not only for his Olympic accomplishments, but for his overall athletic achievements and character while representing Telluride," said Mountain Village Mayor Dan Jansen.

A life-long dog lover, Kenworthy fell smitten with a stray litter of puppies while he was in Sochi. He vowed to bring the mother and her four puppies home and has been working diligently to get the dogs the proper vaccinations and papers to fly them back to the States. Kenworthy has accomplished his goal and brought the three remaining dogs, Mama, Jake and Rosa, to their new home of Telluride to join in the celebration.
