TTB: Telluride's Diverse Cuisine Offers a World of Flavors


International Culinary Experiences Spice Up Summer in Southwest Colorado

TELLURIDE, Colo. (June 7, 2012) – There are few places that rival Telluride for its scenery, outdoor adventures and summer festivals, not to mention a distinctive dining scene with an international flair. This summer, visitors to Telluride can sample flavorful offerings from longtime favorites and new restaurants, in addition to exceptional food festivals and one of the best farmer’s markets in Colorado. 

For a town of fewer than 2,500 residents, Telluride boasts an impressive variety of culinary experiences, from the traditional to the unexpected. La Marmotte serves up rustic French seasonal dishes, while La Cocina de Luz offers taqueria-style Mexican and Southwestern cuisine. Honga’s Lotus Petal, a Telluride institution from Korean-born, Colorado-bred Honga Im, serves Pan Asian cuisine prepared with local, natural, organic, and free-range ingredients whenever possible. 

Rustico Ristorante, which Wine Spectator has called “a restaurant any city in America would be proud to posses,” offers guests more than 1,000 wines from every corner of Italy, in addition to homemade sausages and mozzarella and family specialties passed down through generations. 221 South Oak features local menu highlights for carnivores including Rocky Mountain Elk Chop and Colorado Lamb Shank, along with a wide variety of inventive vegetarian dishes, and The Butcher and Baker Café is a fresh and friendly spot for local and organic breakfast and lunch. 

The even better news for visitors is that Telluride’s restaurant portfolio is continuing to expand. New restaurants include Flavor Telluride, featuring a menu of classically inspired comfort food that comes to life in the newly modernized Historic Dahl Haus, a boardinghouse for miners built in the late 1800s; Tomboy Tavern in Mountain Village which features a European-inspired beer garden with more than 30 craft beers from around the world; and Zest, a European-style deli serving hot and cold gourmet prepared meals and snacks.  

Lodging properties throughout Telluride are also offering unique culinary experiences this summer to enhance the town’s foodie experience. The Chop House, in the New Sheridan Hotel, has added Friday and Saturday specials made only with ingredients from the local farmer’s market. On July 28, the Chop House is also offering a Wine Fest Luncheon as part of the Telluride Wine Festival featuring a five-course food and wine pairing with chef Erich Owen of the New Sheridan and chef Kelly Liken of the hit show “Top Chef.” For those who have always wanted to learn how to make their own sushi, lumière Telluride will be offering new sushi classes every Saturday throughout the summer.

At Hotel Madeline “Poetry Dinners” are held, upon request by guests, in which diners are presented with a special menu inspired by a variety of poems that highlight specific types of wine and foods. The dinners are created to introduce guests to stories about the wines and foods. As guests eat, the hotel’s staff performs a poetry reading. Hotel Madeline will also host its Foraging Dinner on August 18 during the weekend of the Telluride Mushroom Festival, at the height of the area’s mushroom season. The hotel’s staff hikes into the mountains with the equipment needed to set up a 20-person dinner in the wild, while guests of the hotel forage for mushrooms on a guided hike. Guests’ findings are then incorporated into the menu, which is paired with wines that complement the mushroom-centric dishes. 

Telluride is also home to an array of festivals and markets that delight the taste buds including:

  • Telluride Wine Festival, June 27-July 1: The longest running wine festival in Colorado includes engaging wine seminars, cooking demos with celebrity chefs, wine tastings, live concerts and more.
  • Telluride Festival of the Arts, August 17-19, 2012: Culinary enthusiasts and fine art aficionados come together to share a common passion for food, art and entertainment.
  • Telluride Blues and Brews, September 14-16, 2012: This Colorado favorite combines the best brews with the finest in traditional blues music.
  • The Telluride Farmer’s Market, in operation each Friday from June 8 until the second week in October, is a must for foodies. The market features high quality food products, artisanal good and crafts, all from within 100 miles of Telluride. 
  • The Mountain Village Market on the Plaza, launched in 2011, features homemade and homegrown products for sale and is held every Wednesday from June 20 through August 22.
