Why You Should Spend Winter 2012 in Telluride

IMG 0406

The holidays are over. No more parties. No more shopping. Now what? For those feeling like they need to decompress from the holiday madness Telluride is just the destination to do the job. From world-class spas, exceptional dining, sensational shopping, impeccable lodging and, of course, unmatched ski terrain, Telluride has it all. With the state of Colorado calling home to 26 ski resorts, choosing your winter vacation destination can be a difficult choice. And that’s what this post is all about…why you should choose Telluride.

Let’s start with the most obvious reason…it’s beautiful. What better way to relax then to bask in all the beauty that the box canyon has to offer…Alpine glow, majestic snow-covered peaks and blue-bird skies (and that’s the short list).

Of course we can’t have a post about winter in Telluride without mentioning Telluride Ski Resort. At the time that this post is published, Telluride continues to have some of the best snow conditions in the country. Why book a ski vacation without snow? With 2,000 skiable acres and 127 runs (oh, and did we mention that we have one of the only heli-skiing operations in the state of Colorado? Telluride Helitrax) Telluride serves an optimal ski vacation destination. (Check-out the video by Telluride Newb to see skiing in action!).

What’s new to the resort this year? New on-mountain dining! Bon Vivant (11,220 ft.) is located at the top of Polar Queen Express lift 5 and features classic country French cuisine, top wines and ski country’s best crepes and hand crafted hot chocolates. Best part of Bon Vivant? Dining outdoors under a beautiful blue-bird sky!

Now that we have brought-up dining, let’s segway in to the exceptionally scrumptious dining options Telluride and Mountain Village have to offer. Who knew such a small town could have such a eclectic dining scene? With over 40 dining choices from high-end award winning chefs to delicious quick bite eateries, Telluride has it all.

So not everyone wants to ski. And there is nothing wrong with that! Telluride is packed with things to do outside the confines of the mountains. For the more adventurous type, get out and enjoy the bevy of activities we have to offer. Snowshoe one of the many trails just a walk away from main street (Bear Creek, Tom Boy Road, Valley Floor, Boomerang, and more). Ice-skating is another great alternative with two outdoor rinks, one in Mountain Village and one in Telluride Town Park or try the indoor Pavilion rink in Telluride Town Park.

For those who like the idea of skiing but want to stay off the mountain, the Telluride area offers a multitude of cross-country and skate-ski areas for use. Don’t have the equipment or need lessons? Stop by the Nordic Ski Center’s office located in Telluride Town Park and find all of your Nordic ski needs all in one spot (they also rent out sleds and ice-skates).

Other outdoor alternatives: try snowmobiling, fly fishing, ice climbing or horseback riding.

For those wanting to enjoy a more relaxed non-skiing alternative Telluride is home to over 40 specialty boutique shops offering a variety of items from high-end artwork to clothing and jewelry and over 30 spas to aid your relaxation needs.

So, amongst a horde of other things, these are the reasons why you should plan your vacation getaway in our tiny, friendly town. Let us create your home away from home. Call our Central Reservations department at 888.605.2578 and let our staff create the perfect vacation for 2012!
