Telluride's Backyard is Full of Winter Adventures
Ski season is just around the corner. The Telluride Ski Resort opens November 24. Enthusiastic skiers are already waxing their boards and sizing their boots.
Although Telluride’s wide variety of terrain can keep skiers and riders busy on the mountain during their entire ski vacation, it is also fun to explore Telluride’s backyard where adventure awaits.
Nordic terrain in the area offers a change of scenery and a great workout. Groomed tracks can be found in Telluride Town Park, on the Valley Floor, on the Mountain Village golf course, and at Priest and Trout Lake. Each location offers different lengths and difficulty in trails. The Telluride Nordic Center in Telluride Town Park is a great resource for trails conditions, lessons and gear rentals.
Rent a fat tire bike and head out on the groomed bike trail on the Valley Floor. Reward yourself with a tasty brew at Telluride Brewery at the end of the ride.
An extensive network of groomed trails just outside Telluride and Mountain Village create a snowmobilers paradise. Venture out with a local outfitter on a half day or full day snowmobile tour.
When the whole family wants to go for a walk in the woods, don’t let the snow stop you. Easy to learn and fun to master, snowshoeing is an activity for all ages. Choose between a leisurely sightseeing outing or an uphill trek for the perfect cardio workout. EcoAdventures offers naturalist guide snowshoe tours on the Telluride Ski Area. Guided snowshoe adventures are also available with a number of local outfitters.
Many streams and rivers in the region are prime for fishing in the winter. Late February to April, the San Miguel River provides excellent fishing opportunities. Local outfitters can guide you on the perfect winter fly-fishing adventure.
