Karl Denson is coming to Telluride

Karl Denson By Adam George

It's easy to sound spolied when you live in Telluride. Yes, the mountain sunsets are spectacular, and I, most definitely, cherry-picked my powder days this winter. My daily commute consists of a three minute stroll through town to the free gondola, a 13-minute ride with views of Wilson Peak and the St. Sophia Ridge.

However, I typically feel the most spolied when the summer music festivals start announcing their line-ups. Bluegrass (June 18-21) is usually the first, and they never dissappoint. This year, in addition to the usual suspects, David Byrne and Elvis Costello are on board. A surprise announcement came from the Wine Festival (June 25-28) when they booked Citizen Cope as the main act after the already fantastic Grant Tasting on Saturday. Can't wait. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are playing a free show at Mountain Village's Red, White & Blues (July 3). I haven't seen her before but it seems she's worth all the hype. KOTO's got George Clinton and Parliament, with Rusted Root as the opener, playing Doo-Dah (July 11). And, we are all anxiously awaiting Blues & Brews release of their 2009 schedule . . . sometime this month is what we're hearing off the streets.

As you can see, my summer concert plans are shaping up. And, I saved the best for last. The wonderful folks at Jazz Celebration (June 5-7) are bringing Karl Denson's wide-as-a-stage smile to town! Karl Denson's Tiny Universe are touring for the first time in three years . . . believe me, I'm counting the days to June 6th. Ozomatli's on the line-up, too. If you haven't seen these guys, you're in for a trip. Bi-lingual, energetic, talented and out to entertain, the entourage that makes up Ozomatli are one-of-a-kind. You get the feeling these guys have as much fun off the stage as they do on.

So, in my humblest opinion, I think a road-trip to Telluride for some live music may be a great way to spend a weekend this summer. You in?
