A Good Ole' Small Town 4th of July Celebration

Fourth of July in Telluride captures the essence of a quintessential small town Independence Day celebration. The experiential equivalent to Grandma's apple pie. Main Street is lined with people decked in red, white and blue as they watch the parade from their lawn chairs.  Small children waving flags perch atop their parents shoulders to catch a glimpse of the action-fire trucks, Harleys, kids on bikes, walking groups, babies in adorable costumes, dancing groups and a whole lot more unforgettable theatrics.

The Parade is just one part of Telluride’s Fourth of July Celebration and there are many ways to enjoy the day but here are a few suggestions:

6 a.m.Rise and shine-a large boom set off by a cannon echoes through the Telluride valley to signify the official start of Independence Day.

7 a.m. Grab a cup of coffee and place your lawn chairs on Main Street to snag a prime viewing spot for the parade.

8 a.m.  Get a great work out as you charge to the top of the Gondola during the 4th Annual Rundola, an uphill foot race from the base of the gondola in Telluride to the top of the ridge. Telluride Foundation is the beneficiary of the event.

11 am.  The Parade kicks off with planes flying over Telluride. This is an amazing spectacle.

12 p.m.  Head to Town Park for the Firemen’s Barbeque.  Grab a plate of finger lickin’ good barbeque and relax. Kids games including three leg races, trout catching, water balloon toss and more  start at 2 p.m.

2 p.m.  Take a stroll back to the past  with a visit to the Telluride Historical Museum. In celebration of 4th of July, there is a performance by Ute Dancers. Admission is FREE and complimentary lemonade will be served

4 p.m.  Rest and relax or tube down the San Miguel River to cool off. Tubes are available at Timberline Ace Hardware. You have to be awake for the amazing fireworks show which starts at dark.

9 pm Get ready for some serious eye candy. This year’s fireworks display will be the biggest show Telluride has experienced in years!  Get comfy on an outdoor deck or set up some blankets and sleeping bags in Town Park to witness the colorful and exciting spectacle.

Don’t forget to enter one of the amazing photos you took during the day into our photo contest. You could win some amazing gear provided by Telluride Sports &  summer trip back to Telluride with lodging by Element 52 and an adventure by Paragon Bootdoctors. Enter the contest here.
