Two Telluride Theatre Companies Merge; Announce New Executive Director

Two local, iconic, non-profits, the Telluride Repertory Theatre and SquidShow Theatre, announced this week an agreement to merge their organizations creating a new entity: Telluride Theatre. Telluride Repertory Theatre, town’s 22-year theatre veterans, and the up and coming five-year old SquidShow Theatre have united as Telluride Theatre.  The new organization has been formed to create an innovative artistic non-profit model and to grow Telluride as a creative home, a theatrical destination and a place with a strong landscape of year round theatrical offerings.

The REP, known for community productions of existing texts, and SquidShow, popular for company-based original work, will both retain their unique brands and continue to offer separate programs under the new company.  Telluride Theatre is slated to offer 10 programs and productions for their inaugural 2012 season.

§     REP – community productions of existing texts

§     SquidShow – company-based original work

§     ACTions Education Program– continue and grow our education programs for adult and children of all ages.

There are many advantages to the merger, according to leaders from both organizations. Chief among them are the inherent benefits of a cooperative of creative minds, the ability to hire staff, and the opportunity to offer quality theatre and theatre education to audiences year round.

And no one is shy to admit, in this economic landscape, it just makes good sense. “Our donors have been clamoring for fewer, stronger non-profits, especially when organizations have such complementary missions as the REP and SquidShow did. We are thrilled to be streamlining and strengthening the theatre community, by lowering costs and increasing our activity,” said Telluride Theatre Chairman, Dylan Brooks.

Brooks added, “Sasha and I met in January 2007 on the set of Suddenly Last Summer, and I’ve been a fan or her energy and artistic vision ever since. Colin is a great actor, and is a fabulous children’s theatre instructor, as I saw firsthand last summer during his debut collaboration with the Telluride Academy. Colin and Sasha at the head of Telluride Theatre make up a dream team. ”

Both organizations have long-championed community education programs in their missions.  Telluride Theatre’s new subset of year-round theatre education is being termed ACTion’s Education, and will offer dynamic, affordable, programs for adults and children throughout Southwest Colorado and beyond.

Colin Sullivan, SquidShow’s Managing Director, has been named Executive Director and Sasha Cucciniello, SquidShow Founder, will serve as Telluride Theatre’s Artistic Director.

"It's a truly exciting time for theatre in Telluride. This merge allows us to offer a full year of productions and expanded education programs and in this current economy that's nothing short of amazing." Said Colin Sullivan, new Executive Director.

“It’s a beautiful marriage,” said Brooks. “We’re all so excited to combine our energies and to bring more theatre to more people.”

“I’m truly thrilled to be able to continue the great tradition of making theatre in Telluride,” said Cucciniello. “Telluride Theatre will give more opportunities to the community to experience and create the art of performance. That’s what this is about, keeping the arts vibrant and sharing it with our community.”

Colin Sullivan, a former actor in New York City, holds a B.A. in theatre arts and a Master’s Degree in teaching.  He has trained as part of the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville’s professional apprenticeship program. He moved to Telluride in 2008 and almost immediately discovered SquidShow’s unique brand of original theatre. Within a year, Sullivan was a full-fledged company actor and had taken over the Managing Director position, overseeing the fiscal management of the company and increasing it’s operating budget by over 40% every year.  Along with his new role as Executive Director, Sullivan plans to stay on as a professional company actor and instructor in the education programs.
