Ekphrasis: Ekphrasis has been considered generally to be a rhetorical device in which one medium of art tries to relate to another medium by defining and describing its essence and form, and in doing so, relate more directly to the audience, through its illuminative liveliness.

The newly renovated Stronghouse Gallery opens with an energetic exhibit, “Ekphrasis” featuring three lovely local lady artists; Figurative sculptures by Adrienne Lent, jewelry by Jennifer Dewey, and ekphratic poetry by Kierstin Bridger.

Adrienne Lent presents a new series of figurative clay sculptures.  She is drawn to the figure for the universal connection and understanding that it provokes. As her work has progressed it has become more surreal and abstract. This direction has made it possible for her to manipulate the figure into more of an emotion, more of an idea. Lent’s work is tied together by a surreal abstraction that gives it a feeling of the fantastic.

Jennifer Dewey’s new work examines multi-cultural symbolism and its impact on her work over time. The symbols she utilizes are a means of communication, healing and historical reference Her interaction with her surroundings is a constant topic of interest and research that informs her work. In Ekphrasis, Jennifer will also show a sampling of repousse pieces, hand wrought jewelry and gems for custom design possibilities.

Kierstin Bridger is a poet whose poetic reflections in response to the artwork will be shared on the walls of the gallery. Bridger won the Telluride Arts’ Mark Fischer Poetry Prize in 2010 in a blind judging of over 100 submissions from the four-corners region. She identifies with the rebellious spirit and landscape of the west. She attempts to transcribe the lyric hum, the moments of story in everyday life, using the odd contents of her pocket or the compelling work of artists who dare to translate our world through their own disparate medium.

Ekphrasis opens on December 15th and runs through the end of January. An opening reception for the artists, that will include brief poetry readings by Kierstin Bridger throughout the evening, will be held during a special Holiday Art Walk on Saturday, December 5th from 5-8pm. Regular hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 12-6pm, with extended hours over the holidays.
