Telluride, CO, June 4, 2013 — While many Telluride entities celebrate 40th anniversaries this year, the Sheridan Opera House is celebrating a huge milestone in 2013 as Telluride’s Crown Jewel turns 100 years old. The historic venue located at 110 N. Oak St. celebrated its grand open on July 3, 1913 as the Segerberg Opera House.
The Sheridan Opera House will commemorate this monumental milestone on July 6, 2013 with the Speakeasy Gala, a 1920s-themed evening of decadence featuring the Cab Calloway Orchestra, gambling, a secret speakeasy and much more. The party theme will center around the 1920s and flapper and gangster costumes are highly encouraged!
The Gala will begin with a red carpet entrance outside the Sheridan Opera House starting at 7 p.m. and the main entrée begins at 8 p.m. with the Cab Calloway Orchestra playing the historic SOH stage.
The night will also feature a themed Legacy Auction with items representing 10 decades. Auction packages include an authentic 1920s movie poster, a 1980s Vespa, original SOH theater seats and more. To commemorate the next 10 years of the Opera House, the Sheridan Arts Foundation will be selling seats as part of its Sponsor a Seat Campaign. All funds raised this evening will go toward the renovation of the Opera House’s entryway renovation. (See other press release for more information.)
Smooth shiny instruments all in a row, red-hot lyrics, silky smooth ensemble work, spicy brass harmonies, a joyful audience bouncing and swaying to irresistible rhythms and the sound of “Hi Di Ho!” filling theaters on cue: these have been the classic trademarks of concerts by the Cab Calloway Orchestra every since the 1920s.
These days, under the baton of Cab’s Grandson, C. Calloway Brooks, the orchestra delivers the same sizzling jazz sound and snazzy stage style, producing the jumps, blues and boogie sounds of “swing that is king and jive that’s alive.” The band uses original vintage orchestrations as a point of departure, creating an authentic brand of hot Cotton Club-style music and hijinks.
Cab developed his musical chops in New York City at the same decades the Sheridan Opera House was first up and running. He lead the legendary Cotton Club out of Harlem and became well known for such songs as “Monnie the Moocher (Hi-De-Ho),” “Stormy Weather,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “Geechie Joe.” Calloway enjoyed a popular recording and touring career his whole life before he passed away in 1994.
Calloway passed on his talent, love of music and his beloved orchestra to his grandson C. Calloway Brooks. Despite attending the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, he credits the many years of experience and his grandfather as the cornerstone of his musical education.
Brooks has performed all at all sorts of venues including the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, The Rome Opera House and now the Sheridan Opera House!
Upstairs, the Sheridan Opera House will be elegantly decorated to emulate the early days of Telluride’s Crown Jewel. Downstairs, a secret speakeasy bar with casino tables, Prohibition inspired specialty drinks from local bars such as the New Sheridan Bar, Oak and more.
Tickets for the Speakeasy Gala are $75 general admission or $125 for limited First Class balcony access. General admission tickets will come with two specialty drink coupons, fine chocolates from Telluride Truffle and more and the balcony will feature those perks, appetizers and a special bar for First Class patrons only!
Durango’s Costume Emporium will have full sets of male and female costumes for the Gala available for rent on Friday, July 5 at the Sheridan Opera House Gallery Room or call 970.247.1859 to reserve your costumes early.
