Expect the unexpected at the Mountain Village Farmers and Artists Market; 12 market dates throughout the summer season.

June 8, 2011 (Mountain Village, Colo.) – After years of toying with the idea of having an outdoor market in Mountain Village Center – a perfect locale with its pedestrian-friendly plazas, gondola connection, and unrivaled panorama – the town decided to put words into action. The first Mountain Village Farmers and Artists Market will take place Wednesday, June 15, 2011, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Heritage Plaza. The atmosphere will be causal, social and fun; the open air commerce enticing; the foods fresh and the art one-of-kind.

“The Mountain Village Farmers and Artists Market can be a great way to enhance the town’s sense of community and vibrancy and create local tradition,” Community Development Director Chris Hawkins said. “Also, the market will provide an avenue to support regional and local businesses that offer homegrown and homemade products. With that being said, the market is not intended to compete with the Telluride Farmer’s Market, but rather compliment it, while also bolstering foot traffic through Mountain Village Center and its businesses.”

In all, 12 markets are schedule during the summer months and in conjunction with the Sunset Concert Series and certain festival weekends:

·       Wednesdays | 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. | June 15; July 6, 13, 20, 27; August 3, 10, 17, 24

·       Saturdays | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. | July 2; September 3, 17

As for what types of goods will be sold at the market, expect the unexpected as the current list of vendors runs the gamut: handcrafted soaps; essential oils; ski care products; jewelry; candles and candle holders; mirrors; hiking and walking sticks; fresh produce, meats, seafood and other foods; wine; and massages, just to name a few.

“The community will see a diverse and unique group of vendors for the market’s first year,”

Planner John Olson explained. “And the town will continue to look for an appropriate mix of vendors who don’t compete with existing Mountain Village Center businesses. To date,

vendors are signed up to provide wine, produce, jewelry, pottery and crafts and the town is seeking performing artists to add animation to the event.”

Filled on a first-come, first-served basis, the town is still accepting applications from vendors who would like to sell homemade goods or homegrown foods. No prepared foods will be accepted except for vendors who have an existing restaurant or café in Mountain Village. At least 20 spaces per market date are available, and vendors may purchase a 2011 Mountain Village Business License and space in all 12 of the season’s markets for just $50. Mountain Village, situated in the heart of the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, was incorporated in 1995 as a home rule municipality. Its founders envisioned a European-style ski-in/ski-out, pedestrian-friendly destination resort that would complement the historic mining town of Telluride. A three-stage gondola transportation system connects the Town of Mountain Village with the Town of Telluride. Situated at 9,500 feet, Mountain Village is comparably a world apart from other resorts: it is innately spectacular, beautifully orchestrated and planned, and overflowing with style, charm and sophistication.
