 FILM NOIR

All shows are double-billed, and evenings begin at 6 p.m. and will include a between-program culinary experience.

Program #1

OUT OF THE PAST (1947, 97 min.)

This film is one of the most subtle and nuanced reflections of the film noir genre. Former private-eye Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) is laying low and trying to live a normal life as the owner of a small-town gas station after falling in love with one of his former client’s mistresses. His mysterious past, however, catches up with him when he’s spotted and summoned for another job by gangster Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas). Directed by Jacques Tourner.

 DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944, 106 min.)

This adaptation of James M. Cain’s pulp classic was nominated for seven Oscars. Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray), a smooth talking insurance salesman meets the beautiful Phyllis Deitrichson (the perfectly casted Barbara Stanwyck) when he arrives to renew her husband’s automobile policy. After an immediate attraction, the two begin an affair that leads to a plot to murder Mr. Dietrichson, but not everything goes as planned. Directed by Billy Wilder.
