Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run
Every July the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run is held in the scenic, yet rugged San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. Beginning in 1992, the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run remains to this day, dedicated to memory of those hardrock miners who made their living within the San Juan Mountains and connects the historic mining towns of Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and Lake City.
What makes the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run unique? Where most other endurance events are completed in one day the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run has an average finishing time of just over 41hrs, which is longer than the cut-off times for most 100 mile events - meaning even the world’s best runners have the “pleasure” of running through the night at Hardrock.
The Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run is NOT just a run in the park or on asphalt roads. The Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run is a trail run that will see participants going over 12,000 feet above sea level 13 times, an additional 7 times over 13,000 and running over the summit of Handies Peak, one of Colorado’s famed “14ers” at an oxygen stealing 14,048 ft. above sea level! When all totaled up, Hardrock participants will run the equivalent from sea level to the top of Mt. Everest and back at an average elevation of more than 2 miles above sea level. Add to that, the steep and grueling descents after each of the lung searing climbs and you will see why it has been said “There are 100 mile races and then there is Hardrock.”
As a testament to the appeal of the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run, the 2016 Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run saw over 1500 applicants from over 45 countries and 46 states – all vying for one of the coveted 152 spots in the run.
Competitively, this year’s field is very deep. The 2016 Hardrock will be headlined by 2014 and 2015 Hardrock winner and current record holder Kilian Jornet, 2014 and 2015 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc winner Xavier Thevenard, Western States 100 course record holder Timothy Olson, Run Rabbit Run winner and top 5 finisher at Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc Jason Schlarb and 2013 Wasatch Front winner Nick Clark. They will be joined by top 10 Hardrock finishers Troy Howard, Scott Jaime, Ted Mahon and Ben Lewis. In what is truly a feat of endurance, Blake Wood will be going for his 20th Hardrock finish. On the women’s side, 2015 women’s winner Anna Frost will be challenged by perennial top Hardrock women’s finishers Darcy Piceu, Darla Askew and Missy Gosney. Joining them will be Wasatch Front winner Bethany Lewis, Run Rabbit run winner Emma Roca and Rio del Lago 100 winner Rachel Bucklin.
