Sculptural Techniques in Clay with Julie McNair
Friday-Sunday, July 25-27 | 1-4pm Friday and 10am-4pm Saturday & Sunday | $250 tuition + $50 materials Clay is a wonderful medium for sculpture because of its plasticity and playful approach to creating form. The primary challenge of making sculptural forms in clay have to do with it shrinking approximately 15% and the need to create even wall thicknesses to avoid cracking while drying and firing. Julie will show students different techniques (coiling, pinching and hollowing out) to accomplish this, depending on the form desired by each student. Students will start with a maquette (small model) and spend the rest of the class enlarging that form. Surface finishes will include colored slips and sgraffito designs (drawing through colored slips). Beyond the technical aspects, Julie will assist each student with their concepts and designs.
