Calypso Rose in Concert
McArtha Lewis, Calypso Rose, was born on the small island of Tobago in the West Indies. She started singing at the age of 15 and for over 50 years has been the reigning “Queen of Calypso”. Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago from African and European roots. The roots of the genre lay in the arrival of African slaves, who, not being allowed to speak with each other, communicated through song. This forged a sense of community among the Africans who repeatedly saw their colonial masters’ origin and culture change, and with this change, brining French, Spanish and British music styles to the island of Trinidad.
If you are looking for an inspirational, uplifting and lighthearted evening of island rhythm music, then this is the show for you. With few professional Afro-Caribbean bands coming through the Telluride region, Calypso Rose and her band are sure to create a unique Sheridan Opera House experience. Please join us on Thursday, September 22nd at 8pm for this moving performance.
