Young People's Theatre Presents "Fantastic Mr. Fox"
It’s off season in Telluride so town is pretty quiet. Many people are away at exotic and warm locales soaking up the sun, wearing flip flops after a winter of powder days and feet crammed into ski boots. Not everyone is gone though. A young group of thespians in Young People's Theatre (YPT)has been hard at work rehearsing this weekend’s performance of “Fantastic Mr. Fox.”
A group of 25 third, fourth and fifth graders will take the Sheridan Opera House stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night (May 2-4) at 6 p.m. to perform “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, adapted and directed by the talented Jennifer Julia.
Jennifer Julia is the founder and director of the Young People’s Theatre (YPT), a program of the Sheridan Arts Foundation. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the program that has certainly come a long way from its first production of “Peter Pan." The set was crafted entirely of recycled cardboard and glue and costumes borrowed from her Mother’s theater company in Maine. Sixteen kids signed up for that show.
Today, more than 200 students, ages 3 to 18, take part in Young People’s Theater’s diverse range of classes and workshops. She describes her program today as more diverse and inventive than ever. Young People’s Theater puts on four musicals each year and offers a range of classes.
Julia is no longer a one-woman show; her team includes a core group of talented, dedicated locals who help with choreography, music and play building.
She credits the success of the program to the philosophy she learned as a graduate student: A non-stressful, fun, challenging environment brings out the innate skills in every child.
Telluride is so fortunate that Julia made her way to Telluride 15 years ago. She has played such an integral role in our thriving arts community and enriched the lives of countless children that have taken the stage under her guidance.
