Miami is envied for its colorful culture, vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and warm winters. But, there are some who say, winter just isn’t winter without a little snow….or perhaps a lot -- people who, each December, trade big waves for deep powder, surfboards for snowboards, Mai Tais for micro-brews and the warm sand for soft snowflakes.

These people come to Telluride, where rugged mountain peaks replace skyscrapers, the town extols a good snowstorm, and the beach refers to a snowfield littered by lounge chairs outside the mid-mountain saloon.

There are hundreds of reasons to visit Telluride this winter, but now with easy connections on the east coast, getting to Telluride is easier than ever. Connect through Dallas or Charlotte on American; Atlanta on Delta; or Houston on United.  Not that you need them, but here are more reasons why visiting Telluride will be the best decision you make this winter.

Experience World Class Skiing

Telluride Ski Resort has something for everyone from the most extreme skier to the expert après aficionado. You’ll cruise groomed runs, crush chutes and hike ridges you never imagined could be in bounds. Park rats can choose from one of three terrain parks, and despite Telluride’s reputation for extreme terrain, 59% of the Mountain is rated beginner or intermediate.

Feel the Eclectic Mountain Culture

There are ski resorts and there are ski towns. Telluride is the latter. Here, you can spend days exploring the shops, eclectic cafes, gourmet restaurants, yoga studios, art galleries and day spas that line Main Street. Chairlifts ascend the mountain from town and you’ll see that they are a part of it, rather than an extension of it. You’ll see more bikes than cars, and realize that lift lines are the exception rather than the rule.

Two Unique Towns Connected by a Gondola

A gondola cable ascending the face of a rugged mountain is the quintessential symbol of any ski town – and Telluride is no exception. Except our gondola, or “the G” as it is affectionately called, does not only provide skier access to the mountain, but also free, green, public transportation back and forth from the town of Telluride with its rustic, Wild West, bad-boy vibe to the Mountain Village—its tamer sibling—with its sophisticated, amenity-rich, Alps-inspired refinement.

Find Adventure Beyond the Mountain

Adventure in Telluride may start on the ski resort, but definitely does not end there. The idea here is get out in the mountains however you can; from snowshoes to snowmobiles, the options are endless. Free groomed Nordic trails crisscross the Valley Floor in town and climb up and down the snow-covered fairways throughout Mountain Village. Outdoor retailers offer guided snowshoeing and snowmobiling tours or options to pedal fat bikes to the local brewery.
